This week, Latincouver is promoting the free webinar , “Understanding the Algorithm and New Release Strategy in the Music Business”, with Adam Popowitz. Popowitz has worked with both major and independent labels as a recording artist since the ’90s and joined Nettwerk Music Group in 2014., with a unique insight into the world of releasing music and developing artist careers.
Popowitz workshop “Understanding the Algorithm and New Release Strategy in the Music Business” on February 9th, 6 p.m. (PT) will be part of Latincouver’s Music Hack series of Masterclasses.
This webinar will provide insight into how an independent record label releases new music. It will specifically target the hyper-competitive streaming universe. Additionally, it will touch upon crucial marketing and production elements essential to getting your music heard.
Popowitz spoke with Latincouver about the masterclass. Here some highlights of the conversation.
Can you tell our audience how your Masterclass is going to be?
“It’s geared towards independent musicians who are planning to or currently making new music.I want to understand better how their music is received and how it works on Spotify or other big streaming platforms.
There are elements of their music they aren’t aware of, like how the algorithm works and how Spotify interprets the “sonics” (meaning the tempo, instrumentation, and arrangements). It is helpful for an artist to use streaming to build their career. So they should understand how streaming works.
The workshop is meant to give a better understanding of this process. It may guide the musicians to make more reliable decisions as they finish the production and move to the marketing phase.”.
How do you think this new way of life, with people connected by the Internet without interacting that much in person, impacts the industry?
“This is an exciting time. I feel everybody’s connectivity, specifically in the music industry, has allowed people to communicate more efficiently.
Typically in the record label industry, we would have phone calls with team members worldwide every day. It was efficient. But I feel now people are talking more on Zoom calls and interacting visually. It has made things easier to create together and incorporate new ideas.
Simultaneously, people have learned how to be less private and welcome others into their worlds. Some are still struggling with that, but overall I think it has been a positive change.
For many artists, this change has impacted their productivity too. It makes sense because your laptop is a mini record studio. It’s almost too easy to make new music. The question is, how are they marketing that art? Everyone should be mindful that it is super competitive out there.”.
So going back to the seminar, why would you tell people, artists to join the webinar?
“I want people to think of digital platforms basically like an old record store. So, your next move should be thinking: How do I get my music into that store? How do I make it easier for people to find my tune in that store?
There is a lot of music out there technically invisible their intended audience can’t find. I want artists to know there are many efficient tools in marketing to help people find their work. Press, social media, branding and video content are some of the elements they should consider. Otherwise, their music will continue to be invisible”.
