First Pfizer and Moderna, now the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 is also licensed in Canada.
Starting the second quarter of the year, 20 million doses of the vaccine will reach Canadian territory for people 18 years of age and older. This vaccine requires two doses to ensure immunization in each person. The second dose can be applied between 4 and 12 weeks after the first one.
The AstraZeneca vaccine has an immunization efficacy of 62.1%, which is lower than other vaccines, though is much easier to transport and store, as it can be kept safe in common refrigerators.
Prime Minister Justine Trudeau told in a news conference that “it means more people vaccinated sooner.”
Johnson & Johnson is another candidate laboratory for the supply of vaccines against Covid-19. Currently, the authorities are evaluating this vaccine, in case there will be satisfactory results, 10 million doses will be purchased in the first phase and 28 million later.
