St Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish culture held on March 17 and commemorating Ireland’s foremost patron saint.
Many people wear green clothing on this day. Parties highlighting Irish food and green-dyed drinks are part of the festivities. Children may enjoy more desserts, and adults savour their usual pint of beer at the local pubs.
In Vancouver, St. Patrick’s Day has always been celebrated on a large scale. However, this year, it is presumed to be a relatively quiet event in British Columbia.
B.C. Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced a few days ago that the province would be restricting liquor sales to control community transmission of Covid-19 from the festivities. According to this order, all liquor sales at restaurants, pubs, bars and liquor stores must stop at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Usual liquor sales will resume on Thursday.
St. Patrick’s Day is on Wednesday, but Irish celebrations are taking place all week. These include Vancouver’s CelticFest, returning with their first-ever virtual festival.
Traditionally, the CelticFest features international and local Celtic musicians, artists, and dancers. It includes concerts, film screenings, whiskey tastings, pub crawls and live music at numerous venues around the city. This year, because of the pandemic, the festival is also offering several virtual options such as an online Trad session, a demonstration on how to make Irish soda bread and a virtual game show, to name a few.
