Aside from slick red carpet appearances and shade-worthy speeches, the 2016 Golden Globe Awards presented Sunday night (Jan. 10) saw Latinos take home a few of those highly coveted statuettes.
When the cameras weren’t at the heels of Jennifer Lopez in her swoon-worthy daffodil Giambattista Valli gown or catching America Ferrera and Eva Longoria’s classy shade for Latina’s in Hollywood, the cameras saw Latinos making their mark in film and television.
Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (pictured above) won Best Director for the motion picture drama The Revenant, which also won Best Motion Picture Drama.
Guatemalan actor Oscar Isaac got to take home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a limited series or motion picture for his role in the HBO movie Show Me A Hero. “There’s not a lot of us,” he said to Entertainment Weekly about Latinos in Hollywood, “and it’s difficult for people that look not like the status quo in this country to get great roles, and it’s happening a little bit more and I feel humbled and honored and blessed to have the opportunity to do that.”
And Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal won the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a television series musical or comedy for Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle, where he fills the shoes of a talented and humorous symphony conductor. The show also won best comedy series.
Alas, Gina Rodriguez didn’t win Best Actress in a TV musical or comedy series for Jane the Virgin. But at least she got to bring home the glory last year, right?
