The China Poblana

Costume Provided by

Nahualli Folklore Society

China Poblana is currently, along with the charro suit, one of the most representative costumes of the Mexican Republic. The costume is made up of: Blouse (Blusa): The blouse is typically made from a lightweight fabric and features elaborate embroidery on the front and sleeves. The embroidery often includes floral motifs and other intricate designs.

Skirt (Falda): The skirt is a full-length garment made from a colorful fabric and is usually adorned with more embroidery at the hem. The skirt can be quite voluminous and is an essential part of the costume’s distinctive look. Rebozo: The rebozo is a long, rectangular shawl that is draped over the shoulders. It can be worn in various ways and adds a touch of elegance to the overall outfit. The rebozo often features embroidery and fringe as well. Jewelry: Traditional jewelry is an important component of the China Poblana costume. This can include necklaces, earrings, and bracelets made from materials like gold, silver, or beads. The jewelry complements the vibrant colors of the costume and adds a sense of authenticity.

Hair Accessories: Many variations of the China Poblana costume include distinctive hair accessories, such as ribbons or flowers, that are worn in the hair. Footwear: The costume is often completed with traditional footwear, which can vary depending on the specific region and style of the outfit. Sandals or other traditional shoes are commonly worn.
